TANZ | MODERNE | TANZ Festival is the annual celebration of contemporary dance in Chemnitz and offers a dynamic platform for artistic expression and cultural exchange. Since its foundation, the festival has been an integral part of Chemnitz’s cultural calendar and presents groundbreaking works by choreographers from all over the world and from all over Germany.

Every year, TANZ | MODERNE | TANZ transforms both traditional and unusual venues in Chemnitz into spaces full of movement, creativity and dialog. The aim of the festival is to make contemporary dance accessible to everyone – with performances in theaters, public squares, industrial sites and urban spaces in order to reach a diverse audience.

The program includes world premieres, internationally acclaimed productions, artist talks, dance workshops and cultural education projects. The festival also specifically promotes up-and-coming choreographers and supports collaboration between local and international female artists.

With its inclusive approach and bold artistic vision, TANZ | MODERNE | TANZ makes an important contribution to positioning Chemnitz as a center for contemporary dance and innovation. The festival shapes the city’s cultural profile and inspires both audiences and artists with the transformative power of dance.

“Welcome to the 11th Festival of International Contemporary Dance in Chemnitz!

You can expect twelve days full of innovative choreographies and – in the truest sense of the word – moving productions at the highest level.

The dance voyage of discovery “Odyssey in C”, based on the novel “Ulysses” by James Joyce, sounds particularly exciting to me. While Joyce has his protagonist stroll through the streets of Dublin, the performance takes us across Chemnitz in 18 stations. The dancers become silent observers of the urban scenery. But instead of remaining at a standstill, they express their thoughts and feelings with contemporary dance. On their foray, together with the audience, they trace the urban infrastructure, the social fabric and, last but not least, the remnants of industrial culture.

The urban touch is also emphasized at the international breaking and hip-hop battle “Soul Expression”. Originating from youth culture, the dance form has long since taken its place in the dance scene. Young dancers in particular will not miss out at this event!

The Tanz | Moderne | Tanz festival will thus become a central event in the Capital of Culture year 2025, presenting the diversity and vibrancy of dance art and at the same time reflecting the spirit of the Capital of Culture in an innovative way. It will not only strengthen the local dance scene, but also attract an international audience and open up new perspectives on the city and its culture.

Many thanks to the festival team and all the dancers for their commitment to giving visibility to contemporary dance in all its facets and focusing on Saxony and Chemnitz. I wish all guests an exhilarating and inspiring time. Discover dance, rediscover the city!

Barbara Klepsch“
