Quorum Ballet (Portugal)

A stage, the dancers, a choreographer. Daniel Cardoso’s work is dedicated to timeless values such as human rights, a sense of brotherhood, peace and respect for differences.

His credo is that our freedom is limited only by our body and mind and that everyone decides for themselves which chains they want to break. “The power of expression makes it possible to turn the inside out where words and gestures can’t go any further. That’s why we dance! That’s why we live!” Without any bias, without any pressure to follow any trends, without following any particular styles, he shows how we can leave any restrictions behind and escape control. By filling our bodies with feelings, music, rhythm and movement, they become the place where the spontaneous is real.

Founded in 2005 by Daniel Cardoso, Quorum Ballet® is a contemporary dance dance company. In addition to several pieces by artistic director Cardoso, the repertoire also includes works by 15 international guest choreographers. The company currently presents around 65 performances a year throughout Portugal and has toured to around 18 countries, including Denmark, the United States, Singapore, China, Serbia, Ecuador, Algeria, Switzerland and Finland. In 2009, Quorum Ballet received the prize for the best contemporary dance company in the first edition of the Portugal Dance Awards and in August 2011 was awarded ex aequo as the best company on stage at the 14a Festival de Castilla y León, Spain. Quorum Ballet is affiliated with an academy that offers dance courses for children, young people and adults and from which the young dance company Projecto Quorum emerged.
Daniel Cardoso is currently a member of the General Council of the National Dance Conservatory of Lisbon.
