This cinematic biography is a tribute by Ralph Fiennes to the Russian dancer Rudolf Nureyev, who, after a guest appearance by the Mariinsky Ballet in Paris in a dramatic escape from the KGB escaped and fled to the West. The movie is based on the book Rudolf Nureyev: The Life from Julie Kavanagh.
Paris in the 1960s: The Cold War is at its height and the Soviet Union sends its best dance company to the West to demonstrate its artistic strength. The Leningrad Kirov Ballet thrilled the Parisian audience, but one man caused a sensation: the virtuoso young dancer Rudolf Nureyev. Attractive, rebellious and curious, he gets carried away by the cultural life of the city. Accompanied by the beautiful Chilean Clara Saint, he wanders through the city's museums and jazz clubs, much to the displeasure of the KGB spies who follow him. But Nureyev enjoys the taste of freedom and decides to apply for political asylum in France. A highly risky game of cat and mouse with the Soviet secret service begins. Based on true events, director and actor Ralph Fiennes (The English patient) in Nureyev - The White Crow the incredible story of the Soviet ballet legend Rudolf Nureyev. Shot on 16mm, atmospheric images bring the eventful 60s back to life. The Ukrainian world-class ballet dancer Oleg Ivenko impressively interprets Nureyev's role. The screenplay was written by David Hare (The reader).
