LES NUITS BARBARES ou les Premiers Matins du Monde
CIE HERVÉ KOUBI (France)

Five years of living between France and Algeria inspired choreographer Hervé Koubi to go on a journey through time with his company: into the depths of past cultures of the so-called barbarian peoples around the Mediterranean. His moving explorations reveal that all the different cultural influences continue to have an effect to the present day, live on in people and connect rather than divide today’s oriental and western Mediterranean countries. He uses their shared history to reach out to their not-so-foreign neighbors and outline a universal culture and shared future. Because long-forgotten traces of past generations live on in each individual.

Founded in 2010 by Hervé Koubi, the company was created after an audition with mainly hip-hop and street dancers from Algeria, Morocco and Burkina Faso. Twelve dancers were selected by the French-trained dancer and choreographer Hervé Koubi. Twelve dancers who had never performed on a stage before. But they not only had the talent, but also the strength to work on his long-term project “Ce Que Le Jour Doit À La Nuit”. Since then, they have enchanted audiences with their athleticism and grace, which is incomparable to Western dance.
