    Gaga/People

    Mon, 21.06.21 | 17.00 - 18.00 | Opera House - Ballet Hall

Gaga is a dance movement language developed by Ohad Naharin (Mr. Gaga), the legendary director of the Batsheva Dance Company. His idea was to create a form of movement that utilizes the healing, dynamic power of movement. Ohad Naharin developed the technique after suffering a back injury himself - a technique explicitly not just for professionals. Gaga is fun and changes the way you look at your own body and is also a new meditative, improvised style of expression from Israel.

Kasia Kizior was born in Poland. In her early years, she studied ballet and folk dance at the National Ballet School in Lodz. Her interest in the social aspects of dance and performance led her to the University of Humanities in Lodz, where she obtained a B.A. in Political Science. Since 2007 she has been working with the Zawirowania Dance Theater, the Polish National Opera in Warsaw and the Opera House in Frankfurt am Main. In 2015, Kasia obtained a Master's degree in contemporary dance pedagogy at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. She currently works as a dance teacher, choreographer and freelance dancer. Recently she has been working as a choreographer for television productions and films. Kasia became a certified Gaga teacher in Tel Aviv in 2019 under the artistic direction of Bosmat Nossan, Saar Harari and Ohad Naharin.

Saxony is the land of tinkerers and inventors, but did you know that many inventions and innovations made their way into the world from Chemnitz? Inventions are often the result of openness, curiosity and the coming together of certain people in the right place. Chemnitz was and is the right place and will therefore also be THE European Capital of Culture in 2025. Ride with us by bike to moving places in the city and learn about the cradle of German machine tool construction, get to know the Saxon locomotive king, find out about the place where the thermos flask was created and get to know the Chemnitz Concertina.
In the twenties and thirties, various dance artists made a name for themselves nationwide with important premieres. Guest performances by Mary Wigman and Gret Palucca also attracted the attention of the dance scene to Chemnitz. After the ensemble was withdrawn to armaments production during the Second World War, Wigman student Thea Maaß and Jean Weidt rebuilt the Chemnitz Ballet and led it to national renown. Under the direction of ballet director Sabrina Sadowska, the international ballet ensemble of Theater Chemnitz is dedicated to a broad artistic spectrum, from classical narrative ballet to contemporary experimental dance and international collaborations.

Life doesn't give Hector any gifts. The one from Leonardo Ferreira The hiker depicted in the film often loses control of his body. Driven by the wind, rain and storm, he fights against the elements and his own tent. He runs, he flees in search of freedom. La Fuite is a reinvention of the mythical circus figure of the clown. The piece presents him as an acrobat, dancer and mime. Leonardo Ferreira embodies a character battered by life who escapes from every situation in a surprising and virtuoso manner. His movements bordering on the absurd and his reaction to every obstacle transport the audience into a world full of humor and poetry. A small circus spectacle for the whole family.

    Staging: Olivier Meyrou
    Light and sound: Jules Pierret
    Performer: Leonardo Ferreira

The author and director, Olivier Meyrou, comes from the world of cinema. He is known for his movie Au-delà de la haine, which won the Teddy Award for Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival in 2007. For La Fuite he refers to the silent films of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.

Once Upon A Time (Once upon a time) is a dance piece that is influenced by the nature of street shows and by Alexander Miller & Maria Chiara de‘ Nobili in collaboration with a multidisciplinary cast of hip-hop, breaking and contemporary dancers. By combining different dance styles and creating a cheerful and carefree atmosphere Once Upon A Time as a parallel fairytale world into which the audience can escape for a brief moment. Choreography: Maria Chiara de’ Nobili, Alexander Miller

    in collaboration with the dancers

Dance: Philip Lehmann, Nam Tran Xuan, Odbayar Batsuri

Alexander „Kelox“ Miller has been dancing since the age of 12. Inspired by design, art, performance and contemporary dance, he developed his own style in combination with classical breaking elements. He gained his first experience with dance theater in 2011 in German-Polish exchange projects such as onTakt in Bautzen or Odyssey in Jelena Gora, Poland, followed by engagements for the Staatsschauspiel Dresden, the urban dance company Nobulus in Salzburg (Austria) and the Dresden-based go glastic company. Parallel to his work at the theater, Kelox was one of the founders of The Saxonz crew in February 2013, a team of Saxony's most extraordinary breakers who focus on international competitions and the promotion of breaking culture in Saxony. The victory at the German Battle of the Year 2014 and 2015 enabled many cross-genre collaborations. Alongside his dance career, he studied Visual Communication at the Bauhaus University Weimar and graduated with a Master of Arts in 2017. His passion for dance brought him to the Palucca University in Dresden in 2018. Shortly afterwards, he created the duet Brotherhood (2019), which was shown at the Urban Art Festival in Herne and TANZ | MODERNE | TANZ 2020. His solo Layover in September 2020 at the Festspielhaus Hellerau formed his master's degree in choreography. Alexander Miller works as a dancer, choreographer, dance teacher and graphic designer.

The Italian choreographer Maria Chiara de‘ Nobili was born in Naples in 1995. She received her bachelor's degree in contemporary dance at the Dancehaus (Milan). Immediately afterwards she moved to Israel, where she took part in the Dance Journey program of the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company for 10 months and at the same time began her choreographic career.

In the summer of 2018, she was invited as a choreographer to develop a 20-minute piece for the College Choreographers Program of the Biennale di Venezia. In the same year, she began studying for a Master of Arts in Choreography at the Palucca University of Dance Dresden.

Further choreographies followed in spring 2019: „QUBE“ premiered in Mendrisio and was on tour in Berlin and Dresden. In Dresden, she choreographed „Dandelion Clock“, which premiered in the Kleines Haus of the Staatsschauspiel Dresden. In June 2019, she was commissioned to create the full-length work „Wrap“ by Marie Chouinard, who invited her to be a guest choreographer at La Biennale di Venezia. In November 2019, she presented the solo „The Answer's in the Eye“ for the Palucca Tanz Studio in Dresden.

During her engagement as a dancer at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden, Maria Chiara created her graduation piece „Master Choreography“ in 2020, which was presented at the Japanisches Palais (Dresden) with the support of TANZPAKT. In the same year, she created „VORTEX“ in collaboration with media artist Ulf Langheinrich, which premiered in October 2020 at HELLERAU - European Center for the Arts, with further dates in Bochum, Le Havre, Munich, Maubeuge, etc. In February 2021, she created the choreography for the play „doch an uns wird sich manche:r später noch erinnern“, directed by Jule Bökamp. At the same time, she created the short duet MOMENTO in collaboration with choreographer Alexander Miller. In summer 2021, she will develop two new creations for Theater Chemnitz and HELLERAU - European Center for the Arts: „Once upon a time“ and „Pack“ in collaboration with choreographer Alexander Miller.

In addition to their established work as individual choreographers for venues such as HELLERAU - European Center for the Arts and La Biennale di Venezia, among others, choreographers Maria Chiara de‘ Nobili and Alexander Miller began their collaboration and founded the collective MILLER / DE‘ NOBILI after completing their Master of Choreography studies at the Palucca University of Dance Dresden.

Their first collaboration, MOMENTO (2021), was invited to participate in the renowned choreography competition Choreography 35 Hannover, the Dance Days Chania Festival and the Istanbul Fringe Festival 2021. They are currently working together on „Once upon a time“, a new creation commissioned by Theater Chemnitz. In summer 2021, they will choreograph the piece „PACK“, co-produced by TANZPAKT, which will be shown at HELLERAU - European Center for the Arts.

The program is funded by the FONDS DARSTELLENDE KÜNSTE with funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.

    HIP-HOP - DON'T STOP!

    #ChemnitzMovesOn!

    Sat, 19.06.2021 | 15.00 - 18.00 hrs | Stadthallenpark

    Free admission

Despite the pandemic, a cultural event for the local hip-hop scene is finally taking place again, true to the motto „Hip-Hop - Don't Stop!‘.

With the traditional TANZ | MODERNE | TANZ - Battle, the festival, in cooperation with the TANZbüro Chemnitz, the Städtische Theatern , The Saxonz and Room - Local Hip-Hop Spot, offers a colorful mix of different dance styles such as hip hop, breaking, popping and house, which meet in an exciting battle atmosphere.

In this year marked by the pandemic, invited dancers from all over Germany compete in so-called „exhibition battles“, i.e. show battles without a jury with a focus on exchange and entertainment.

The event is an attempt to give dancers of hip-hop culture some space for creative development again after the long period of restrictions. Last but not least, the spectacle also serves to bring young and old a little closer to the various dance styles of the colorful world of hip-hop. So if you happen to be in the area, all you have to do is follow the music. It's worth it!

Room - Local Hip-Hop Spot was founded in 2020 by members of The Saxonz and the Chemnitz Chapter Raptor. It offers a space to learn dance styles such as breaking and stand-up styles such as hip-hop or dancehall in Chemnitz and to further develop the local scene. The idea of the dance studio, which emerged from the training room, has its origins in Saxony's closely networked crew landscape, with participants from all walks of life. In its work, the dance community includes all elements of the Chemnitz hip-hop scene as well as graffiti artists and DJs. Entrepreneurs, cultural workers, scene artists and public institutions are already cooperation partners of the local hip-hop spot.

Concept and organization: Nam Tran Xuan

Nam Tran Xuan is a versatile dancer and member of the Chapter Raptor group from Chemnitz. He started dancing 15 years ago and gradually established himself in the Saxon dance scene. His focus is now on hip-hop freestyle, but he was also able to learn some basics from other club and street dance styles in workshops with national and international dancers and incorporate them into his dancing. Among other things, his year abroad in Vancouver was particularly formative. He was also able to gain experience at various dance competitions and performances. Today, he is working on developing himself and his dance in various aspects with the help of friends and mentors in order to pass on his knowledge and promote the Chemnitz dance scene together with Chapter Raptor.
